How do you calculate the Impact Factor (IF) for journals?
Impact factor was first designed by Eugene Garfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 1975. IF is a ratio between citations and recent citable items published by individual journals.
- A = the number of total citations received by a Journal in (say) 2020.
- B = the number of citations received by the Journal in 2020, but only to articles published in the previous 2 years (2018-2019); hence, B is a subset of A.
- C = the number of articles published by the journal in the previous 2 years (2018-2019).
- D = B/C = the IF of the Journal for 2020.
